Scoliosis in Children and Adults

Scoliosis begins with spinal misalignment, deviation, and any postural change that’s over 10 degrees.

Chiropractors will identify scoliosis by measuring 10 degrees from the front view, where there’s visible side bend. Of diagnoses, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and adult degenerative scoliosis are the most common.

In adults, scoliosis can be caused by a longstanding uncorrected postural misalignment. When bad posture is ignored, the spine eventually loses its ability to be stable against gravity. The result is your spine being pulled in, causing pressure on nerves, pain, and reduced mobility.

For young patients, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is generally caused by asymmetrical growth in one or more vertebrae. This can be treated with postural and/or spinal rehabilitation. However, if the conditions worsen, a back brace or orthopedic surgery may be necessary.

Rowe Chiropractic recommends regular spinal checkups for developing children, so early symptoms of scoliosis can be identified and properly treated.
