Poor spinal health can be a major factor in contributing to clinical depression and anxiety.

A 30-year-old woman with a clinical diagnosis of depression and anxiety visited a chiropractor to correct her spinal curvature and posture. After the treatment, the patient reported improved sleep habits, energy, and overall quality of life. She also ceased taking her medications to treat her depression and anxiety, according to a 2018 study published in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research.

Treating Your Spine Can Reduce Anxiety Triggers

A patient who received chiropractic care for neck pain and headaches experienced reduction in cortisol levels and perceived anxiety, according to a 2020 study published in the Journal of Contemporary Chiropractic.

The 40-year-old woman sought care for recurring neck pain and headaches, which impacted her everyday activities. The patient had a history of anxiety that worsened alongside musculoskeletal symptoms, the study said.

Her treatment included chiropractic adjustments to the cervical and thoracic spine using a diversified technique along with instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization over 12 visits. This also included a home-exercise program.

Objectively, the chiropractic treatment improved her spinal health by correcting her vertebrae to reduce neck pain and headaches. Additionally, there appeared to be a correlation between the patient’s anxiety and cortisol levels.
